The Hip

The hip joint’s primary responsibility is to support your body weight when you are engaged in dynamic movements and when you are standing still. In fact, the hip joints are the key components in your ability to retain balance.

What Causes Hip Pain?

Hip pain, or any pain in or around the hip joint, can generate from the hip itself or from any of the numerous structures that surround the hip. Additionally, hip pain can be referred from the low back. Hip joint pain is usually reported in the front or side of the hip while low back pain is felt in the buttocks.

You are most at risk for hip pain if you:

Have a history of hip trauma
Perform repetitive running, squatting or kneeling motions in athletic pursuits or work tasks
Have weak and/or tight hip musculature

Common Hip Conditions

Our Physical Therapists will develop a customized treatment plan to relieve your hip pain and restore mobility. The most common hip injuries that are effectively treated with physical therapy are:

Iliotibial Band (ITB) Syndrome
Muscle Strains
Arthritis/Arthrosis
Bursitis

Treatment Options

Our team of Physical Therapists treats patients using evidence-based treatment techniques that speed recovery time while reducing the risk of recurrence of hip pain:

Manual therapy to decrease pain, increase range of motion, and improve function
Therapeutic exercises to strengthen hip, thigh, and core muscles while providing stabilization of the hip joint
Functional exercises that are tailored to your activity level
Self-management education to reduce chance of recurrence

Common Hip Surgeries

Some hip injuries do not respond to physical therapy alone. In these instances, surgery is required and physical therapy is a follow-up treatment strategy. The most common hip surgeries are:

Total Hip Replacement
Arthroscopic Surgery
Femoral Acetabular Impingement Decompression (FAI)
